MRC Laboratories Job: Recruitment for Research Clinician (Severe Pneumonia Studies) 

THE ORGANIZATION:

The MRC Unit, The Gambia is the Medical Research Council’s largest establishment conducting laboratory, field based and clinical research in a developing country. To reflect changes in national and global health priorities and new international funding opportunities a new research portfolio has been organized under three themes: Child Survival; Disease Control & Elimination; Vaccinology. These themes have been selected to target national health needs, to reinforce sub-regional and international links and to address some of the major priorities in the Millennium Global Health Goals. The Unit is conducting a number of studies of severe pneumonia in children and will be part of the multi-country Pneumonia Etiology Research for Child Health (PERCH) project.

We are seeking applications from suitably qualified candidates to fill the position below.

POST TITLE:  Research Clinician- (for the Severe Pneumonia Studies) – MRC Basse

The post-holder will be responsible for enrolment, investigation and clinical management of children enrolled in the severe pneumonia studies. S/he will be a part of a team involved in a wider programme of pneumonia research in the Unit.

The post-holder will be based in Basse, which is in a rural area approximately 400 kilometres from the coast where local facilities and schooling are limited.

We seek Someone with:
  • MB BS or equivalent
  • FWACP Part 1 or equivalent
  • Minimum of three years post-graduate experience, preference given to paediatrics.
  • Good record keeping skills.
  • Good clinical procedure skills
  • Excellent written and spoken English.
  • Experience of supervising staff.
  • Computer literacy in Windows, Word, Excel and statistical software.
  • The ability to deal sensitively with children and their mothers.
  • The ability to work well in a multi-disciplinary team, Including scientists public sector and Government staff.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Willingness to work flexible hours and be on-call.
  • Willingness to live and work in Basse
Although not essential, FWACP Part 2 and past experience of clinical trials would be an advantage.

SALARY/REMUNERATION:

Salary will be in Occupational Group E1/E2 dependent on qualifications and experience. The Salary for Occupational Group E1 is within the range 671135 Dalasis per annum -923382 Dalasis per annum which converts to E14914 – E20520  per annum before tax and E11514 – E15761 per annum after tax. The successful candidate with their FWACP Part 2 will be in Occupational Group E2. The minimum salary for Occupational Group E2 is 941405 Dalasis per annum before tax and 722912 Dalasis per annum after tax. This converts to E16065 per annum after tax. The point on the E2 scale is dependent on experience. Please note that the salary package is paid in Dalasis and the sterling figure quoted is just given as a guide. For displaced staff the packages will include rent-free furnished accommodation, flights, contribution to school fees and shipment of personal effects.

The appointment will be to 30th September 2013.
