Lagos State Health Service Commission has commencement the recruitment of medical doctors and other health professionals amid unresolved issues with striking doctors in the state.
Already, the state government has opened a recruitment portal for interested applicants from Wednesday, Jul 15, 2020.
This is happening as doctors in the employ of the state under the aegis of Medical Guild are still observing their three-day warning strike to drive home their demands, which include alleged non-payment of hazard allowance, poor working conditions, insufficient housing quarters, among others.
The Lagos state governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, while speaking to journalists on Monday, said most of the issues being agitated for by the doctors had been addressed. He appealed to the striking doctors to return to work in view of the precarious health situation thrown up by the Covid-19 pandemic.
Patients across public health facilities in the state, including the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH) and the 27 general hospitals in the state, have been left without medicare as a result of the warning strike, forcing some to seek help in private hospitals.
The ongoing recruitment, according to a statement by the state Health Service Commission, is to fill vacant positions in the 27 general hospitals. This followed the approval granted by Governor Sanwo-Olu to increase the staff strength of medical personnel in the hospitals.
“Some of the vacant positions for employment opportunities include that of medical consultants, medical and dental officers, pharmacists, nursing officers, pharmacy technicians, dental therapists and dental technicians,” the commission said.
